Gold is mostly found on the edges of small rivers. You really have to dig down deep and grab as much mud and dirt as you can and sift through it to find the gold. If you are using a pan the gold sticks to the bottom of the pan as it is heavier than all the mud and dirt and the pan is magnetic since it is metal. Most people would either use a metal pan or a wooden cradle. Nowadays there is also plastic pans, but in those days they didn't have strong plastic.
This is a small video on how to pan for gold
In Bathurst you can still visit the goldfields with a tour guide and go mining for gold as a fun activity or even a school excursion!
